Dr. Jay Boughanem is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in shoulder surgery, sports medicine, and joint reconstruction. He is the founder of the Hawaii Shoulder & Orthopedic Institute and practices in Hilo, Kona, and Honolulu, Hawaii. He also serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Hawaiʻi John A. Burns School of Medicine.

Dr. Boughanem earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University, and pursued fellowship training in Shoulder Surgery and Sports Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He also completed advanced shoulder surgery training at Osaka Medical College in Japan.

An active educator and researcher, Dr. Boughanem has authored numerous scientific publications and serves as faculty at national and international orthopaedic meetings. His clinical interests include shoulder arthroscopy, rotator cuff repair, shoulder instability, shoulder arthroplasty, and biologic treatment options for shoulder disorders.
